Our Story

Who We Are
Hello! We’re Hayley and Marc, and we run The Red Lion together as a family, right in the heart of Hooe village. Hayley has worked in hospitality for many years, while Marc has a passion for the outdoors, agriculture, farming, and fencing.
Whether you're visiting the area or live locally, we pride ourselves on offering a warm welcome, supported by our lovely, dedicated team. At The Red Lion, you'll find brilliant beers, great gins, and fabulous food—sourced locally and seasonally whenever we can.
We’d also love for you to check out our sister pub, which we’ve proudly run since 2019.
We look forward to welcoming you soon!
Our Pubs History
Aswell as the Hayley, Marc and their family the pub also hosts 2 ghosts within its walls! Dozens of patrons and residents have experiences the ghosts and their activities. A common story that many have experienced is seeing a man in unusual clothing, not of this time, walk into the ladies bathroom. Built in 1495 and transformed into a pub in the 1600s, The Red Lion has stood at the heart of village life for centuries. Once a notorious smugglers’ haunt, its attic housed a secret tobacco mill said to inspire the phrase “money for old rope.”
The pub’s colourful past is matched by its ghostly legends. Guests have reported shadowy figures in historic dress, strange footsteps, and unexplained encounters linked to the violent clashes between smugglers and customs men.
Today, The Red Lion blends great home cooked food, local ales, and warm hospitality with the atmosphere of a truly historic—and possibly haunted—English country pub
