Nestled in the heart of the Wealden District of East Sussex, the charming village of Hooe is a hidden gem that blends history, heritage, and natural beauty. Just north of the A259 Coast Road and easily reached via the B2095 from Ninfield, Hooe is a peaceful rural retreat with a story to tell. Though small—with just 183 households recorded in the 2022 census—Hooe is rich in charm and character. Its winding lanes, traditional cottages, and welcoming village atmosphere make it a delightful place to explore.
The village is surrounded by a patchwork of small farms, rolling fields, and hedgerows, creating a tranquil countryside. Farming has long been at the heart of Hooe’s way of life. Traditional rural pursuits, from working farmland to seasonal game shoots, remain part of the landscape. Once home to its very own windmill—situated where “The Retreat” now stands beside the village recreation ground—Hooe also holds strong ties to its agricultural past.
To the south, the Pevensey Levels, a stretch out in a mosaic of low-lying grazing meadows teeming with wildlife. This unique expanse of countryside, offers a glimpse of Sussex’s natural heritage at its finest.
Just a little further afield, Little Common is only 3.1 miles away from The Red Lion. A countryside drive through the lovely lanes from Straight Lane at the top of Hooe Common—or a quick journey along the A259 before turning up Green Lane—brings you to this bustling village. Little Common offers a range of great amenities, making it a convenient and lively spot to explore before returning to Hooe.
For seaside lovers, Cooden Beach is just 3.8 miles away. With its wide stretch of shingle and sea air, it’s the perfect place to unwind on the coast. After enjoying a refreshing day at the beach, a short drive brings you back to The Red Lion, where you can relax with a hearty meal and a pint of local beer. Cooden Beach also boasts its own train station, providing excellent connections for those arriving by rail & taxi.
Heading east along the A259, just 4.7 miles away lies Pevensey, a place steeped in history. Here you’ll find the starting point of the famous 1066 Country Walks and the impressive Pevensey Castle, a site brimming with Norman heritage.
